Instagram created a new way to help its younger users feel safe online. Young people will have the choice to keep their accounts private or public for creator’s accounts. Instagram also made changes to protect their community from abuse and harassment. Its new feature is called Limits. Instagram is serious about taking care of its community, especially those more vulnerable.

Instagram’s goal is for people to make new friends, but it will default accounts of those under the age of 16 to private. Only the followers they allow to view their content will be able to interact with them, like their pictures, stories and see their hashtags. Instagram will also make it harder for potentially suspicious accounts to find young people. They will limit the options advertisers have to reach young people with ads. These changes will create a safe environment giving young people the power and tools to protect themselves.

Limits is a new feature that helps protect users who experience sudden spikes of comments and DM requests from strangers. Most of the time, like in the case of Olympic athletes, they get a lot of support from their followers. But there are times they get unwanted attention, comments, or private messages. They can quickly turn on the feature, and Instagram takes care of it. Research shows that public figures receive a lot of negativity, mainly from people who don’t follow them or people who just started following them. These are usually people whose sole goal is to target them.

When someone tries to post an offensive comment, Instagram has been showing them a warning message. If they attempted multiple times, and an even stronger message would pop. With the new feature, they show a stronger message the first time they attempt. Hidden words automatically filter offensive words, phrases, and emojis into a hidden folder they have access to. Low-quality and spammy messages will also get filtered. Instagram is currently working on improving its systems to find and remove abusive content faster and hold the people posting accountable. They recognize these are serious issues and are working with governments and NGOs to mitigate and end hate speech.
