In today’s fast-paced digital world, standing out means showing—not just telling—what you can do. Whether you’re a digital marketer, marketing manager, account coordinator, graphic designer, or social media manager, having a strong portfolio is key to landing clients, jobs, or freelance gigs. The good news? There’s a lot of crossover in your work, and that means your portfolio can serve multiple purposes if you build it smartly. It can also be used as a way to earn potential clients, but it is sometimes good experience to start working with in-house marketing team or agency to start as you continue to grow.

Here are our top tips to help you create a versatile, results-driven portfolio:

1. Start with Strategy, Not Just Aesthetics

Your portfolio isn’t just a gallery—it’s a story. Start by thinking about:

Who your audience is (Potential clients? Employers? Agencies?)

What type of work you want to get more of

Which industries you specialize in or want to break into (You can try and work on projects that show your expertise and design to work in a certain industry.)

Tailor your content and layout accordingly. For example, if you’re aiming for startup clients, your portfolio should highlight work that reflects agility, growth strategy, and results.

2. Show Off Real-World Results

No matter your role, metrics matter. This is something that you might have to work towards as you get more real world experience and start to build up your portfolio.

Digital Marketers: Highlight campaign KPIs—CTR, conversion rate, ROI.

Social Media Managers: Include engagement rates, follower growth, viral posts.

Graphic Designers: Add how your designs impacted brand awareness or conversions. If just starting off, you can focus on the strategy of the creative.

Pair visuals with context: what was the goal, what did you do, and what was the outcome? This shows that you don’t just create—you solve problems.

3. Create Case Studies, Not Just Snapshots

It’s tempting to upload a carousel of images, but deeper insights set you apart. Turn select projects into short case studies with this format:

The Brief: What was the objective?

Your Role: What specifically did you contribute?

The Process: How did you approach the project?

The Results: Back it up with data or feedback.

This format works for all three roles and demonstrates professionalism and strategic thinking.

4. Curate, Don’t Dump

More isn’t better—relevance is. Choose 5–10 of your best, most recent, and most relevant projects. A lean, high-impact portfolio is more compelling than one filled with outdated or mediocre work. You can add more then 5-10 pieces if they are quality. The goal at the end of the day though, is to put your best foot forward. You will start to add or remove certain projects as time goes on.

Consider organizing by category or service (Sometimes you will also organize by brand if you have a brand that you did a lot of projects for.)

Campaigns

Branding

Ad Creative

Social Media Content

Web Design or UX/UI

Etc.

5. Include Testimonials or Social Proof

A quote from a happy client or a manager can go a long way. These are easy to source via LinkedIn, email, or even screenshots. Even if you’re early in your career, a short testimonial builds credibility. (Many jobs will also ask for some letter of recommendations.)

6. Don’t Skip Your “About” and Contact Info

People hire people, not portfolios. Include a brief, personable bio that explains who you are, what you specialize in, and what you’re passionate about. Make sure your contact info is easy to find—or better yet, include a contact form.

If you’re a freelancer, consider adding your availability and pricing structure (if appropriate) but sometimes it is better to leave this for a follow up.

7. Use the Right Tools

Some great portfolio platforms that work well across creative and marketing roles include:

Adobe Portfolio (great for visual work)

Behance (for designers and other creatives)

Any Design or Layout Program For PDF Portfolio

WordPress / Webflow / Wix (for a more custom experience)

Social media managers and marketers can also use Google Slides or PDF case studies for a more corporate audience.

8. Keep It Updated

Your portfolio should evolve with your skills. Make a note to update it every few months—new clients, new wins, better content. A stale portfolio won’t reflect your current capabilities.

Bonus Tip: Learn & Build at the Same Time with Palm Beach Code School

If you’re just starting out or looking to pivot into digital marketing, graphic design, web development, filmmaking, or social media management, Palm Beach Code School offers hands-on training that can help you build your portfolio as you learn. Their real-world projects and career-focused curriculum are designed to help you walk away with not just knowledge—but work you can proudly showcase.

Whether you’re refreshing your skills or stepping into the digital space for the first time, Palm Beach Code School is a great place to begin building both your portfolio and your confidence.

Final Thoughts

Building a strong portfolio takes intention, not just content. Whether you’re a digital marketer focused on data-driven growth, a designer passionate about visual storytelling, or a social media manager juggling strategy and creativity —your portfolio is your stage. Make it count. Even if you’re aiming for roles like account coordinator or project manager rather than creative ones, it’s still valuable to showcase the projects you’ve contributed to—some account execs have portfolios that rival those of designers. Portfolio building is a key part of your experience in the Digital Marketing Program at Palm Beach Code School.

A portfolio is essential—whether you’re a designer, marketer, or filmmaker. Include case studies, campaign results, mockups, reels, or content you’ve created. Make sure it’s easy to navigate and tells a story about your style and capabilities.

3. Level Up Your LinkedIn Game

LinkedIn isn’t just for corporate jobs. It’s where recruiters, clients, and collaborators look to find creative talent. Keep your profile updated, showcase your work, write a strong summary, and connect with professionals in your target field.

4. Customize Every Application

Don’t just hit “apply” and hope for the best. Tailor your resume and (yes) your cover letter to each role. Address the company’s tone and mission, and explain why you would be a great fit for them.

5. Practice Talking About Your Work

Be prepared to talk through your creative process—what tools you used, your strategy, the results, and what challenges you overcame. Whether it’s a marketing campaign, short film, or branding project, employers want to know your thinking behind it.

6. Keep Your Work Online and Accessible

Have a clean, mobile-friendly portfolio site or a linkable Google Drive folder with your best work. Hiring managers want to click and see your skills right away—don’t make them dig for it.

7. Stay Active on Creative Platforms

Dribbble, Behance, Vimeo, YouTube, Instagram—use platforms relevant to your field. Regularly post your work, behind-the-scenes content, or your creative process. Employers love to see people who are active and passionate about their craft.

8. Network and Get Involved in the Community

Whether it’s local film festivals, marketing meetups, creative workshops, or digital conferences—get out there! Networking often leads to referrals, freelance gigs, and full-time roles. Follow local agencies, creatives, and studios on social media, too.

9. Apply Even if You Don’t Tick Every Box

Many job descriptions are wish lists. If you meet 70-80% of the qualifications and love the sound of the role, go for it! A strong portfolio and passion can outweigh a missing bullet point.

10. Stay Organized and Track Your Progress

Keep a spreadsheet of the roles you’ve applied to, deadlines, and follow-up dates. Jot down feedback from interviews or edit tests. Treat your job hunt like a project—it’s the first step in your career story.

Palm Beach Code School prepares you with real-world skills—now it’s time to apply them. Whether you’re pitching to an ad agency, joining a production team, designing for brands, or running digital campaigns, your creativity, discipline, and work ethic will take you far.

So stay focused, stay inspired, and most importantly—keep creating.

Katherine Kennedy was furloughed. It was the summer of 2020 and air travel had plummeted as Americans and global travelers suspended their travel plans and hunkered down in their houses to wait out COVID-19. International travel had fallen 60% and US airline losses were expected to surpass $35 billion.

COVID gave Katherine a gut check. Looking at a changing industry that could not predict what the future held, she decided it was time to start looking ahead.

One thing that COVID had taught her was that technology jobs were the face of the future. Platforms like Zoom, Google Meet, Slack were the new normal and workforce trends showed that continuing. Mobile app and website development was surging. From virtual classrooms and remote work to virtual doctors’ visits, more and more industries were reliant on technology to operate effectively.

Determined to take advantage of her furlough, Katherine tried to figure out the ideal career that would blend her interests and natural skill set within an industry forecast for future growth and development. That assessment led her to pursue training in coding, with a focus on web design and development.

“I started assessing my skills and what I wanted to do,” she says. “I have a history with graphic design. I’ve done it in the past, and I’ve always liked math, so I decided to do a coding program.”

Coding, much like other jobs in the computer and technology industry, is projected to see even more growth in the coming years as technology is woven even more intricately into our lives. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects some 13% growth in computer and information technology industries between 2020 and 2030, faster than the average for all occupations.

Coding jobs include front-end development (building a website including all the things that a user sees and touches when they visit a site, like the design, font, colors, buttons, links, and animations, also called the client side), back-end development (building the applications that run the website, organizing the data, and all the behind the scenes things that you don’t see on a site that communicates the database to the server; also known as the server side ), systems engineering, game development, AI programming, and others. Virtually every industry that involves technology is dependent on some form of coding.

Katherine decided to do the Web Design and Development program at the Palm Beach Code School (PBCS), located in West Palm Beach, after researching other online and offline programs. PBCS offers online and in-person courses. Because COVID was still raging, she opted for a hybrid program, taking some classes online and some in person.

“I liked that the Palm Beach Code School offered in-person sessions and that you could meet with your instructors and get in-class experience. I felt I’d work better in that environment because it would be face-to-face and I liked that they offered small classes and an individualized experience, instead of me being one person lost among hundreds,” she explained.

Katherine started PBCS’s Web Design and Development Program in October of 2020 and graduated with a certificate in Web Design and Development in February of 2021. The course took four months and met twice a week for 3 ½ to 4 hours each time. In that time she learned essential coding languages like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, JQuery, PHP, SQL, and Bootstrap.

Looking back, she is amazed. “It was challenging,” she says,” but when you look back from where you started, you realize how much you’ve learned, and how much more there is to learn. I feel confident that my instructors did their best to make me walk away with a foundation on which I can build.”

She likens her experience to learning multiple dialects of the same language to become expert at it.

“It’s almost like learning Spanish, but you learn all the different dialects. So you walk away being fluent in all the dialects and the way in which people communicate. You walk away with the ability to find out how to answer or solve a problem.”

The high point of the course was creating her Capstone project—the end term project designed to show all you’ve learned in the program. Katherine created a website—GeriStretch—for a physical therapy business, writing all the codes for the front- and back-end development.

Presenting the project to her classmates and getting and giving feedback was gratifying.

“We had to break off from one another and work independently,” she says. “So it was good to see all the work that everyone else had done using all the skills we’d learned.”

Her end goal is to work as a web developer, though she hasn’t decided whether she’ll focus on front- or back-end development. She admits that she loves the versatility and creativity of CSS and wants to learn more about JavaScript, which she finds challenging.

“I’m design and project motivated. I want to make things look pretty and perform well. I love the project and problem-solving aspect of it all,” she says.

Currently she works as a flight attendant. The furlough ended and her job, suffering a shortage of workers, called her back. In her downtime she works on various coding programs and is looking to do volunteer web development for a nonprofit until she transitions into working full time in coding.

For a long time, she says, she loved the benefits of being able to travel, but after doing it for so many years, she looks forward to the flexibility of coding, being able to work independently and make her own schedule, but most of all, she laughs, being able to make a living while staying grounded.

There are now billions of hours of footage on YouTube from millions of different creators, all of them wanting their voice to be heard and content to be seen. The question many new creators ask is “Should I start producing original content for YouTube?”.

Whenever you decide to pursue a creative career on the digital landscape, there are a few questions you need to ask yourself.

What audience am I trying to reach? Your audience will be important for your success, as they are the ones driving up your views and engagement on your posts. Analyze your targeted audience, what age are they? Gender? Their interests? Why would they watch your content? How long is the average attention span for someone in your target audience? Would they follow other social profiles of yours? How likely is this type of audience to share your content with others?

What kind of effort will it take to produce quality content? Phones are capable of pretty amazing footage, but they still aren’t professional cameras. Simple technology such as ring lights, blogging equipment, and USB microphones are cost efficient and easy to use, but it’s important to first question how much effort it will take to produce the content before diving into what can be a time consuming project. Are you looking to do graphics? Quick edits? How much time will it take to record one video? Edit one video? The more elaborate the editing in the video, the more time consuming the process will be.

Is it worth it? All of us have lives, families, and unique situations that affect our schedule in some way. Bills, responsibilities and commitments all cost us money and time, so we need to think of the payoff in each job we take on. Most jobs in the professional world, including digital media, have a pretty straight forward pay schedule and rate. Creative endeavors though, are a different story. Think about your schedule, and the time you’d need to sacrifice to achieve a potential career as a YouTuber and Original Content Creator. Will the payoff be worth it? Especially given there is no guarantee of any payoff at all? If you have time and money that can be sacrificed without negatively affecting your life, then it may be worth it.

Creative endeavors do have their benefits if they work out. Being your own boss, making money off of something you enjoy doing, and getting to set your own schedule just to name a few. That being said, understanding the risks and commitment is just as important to the process. Make sure you have a plan before delving into the world of original digital content, as your careers success depends on organization and implementation.

In the earliest days of the media, there were only certain careers you could take on and “make it” in regard to a lucrative reward. Acting, directing, producing, radio, etc. were limited positions, and more often than not, you would be under the direct supervision of a fellow professional.

Social media brought forth an entirely new era, one that made stars out of people making silly, ridiculous and original content on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Twitch, and more. Celebrities have been quoted as saying their job is to be famous, Kim Kardashian being one of the most well known examples of somebody who sells different kinds of perfume and clothing just by having their name attached to it. Similar to a “brand” like Gucci, where you pay for the name and not for the product itself, “Social Media Influencers” have become the new Kardashians.

Some of the most famous YouTube stars started in the early days, with the members of SMOSH creating an original video to the theme of “Mortal Combat” which ultimately pulled in millions of hits. However, Social Media Influencers were those who didn’t need to create creative digital content to become known. Many of them employed specific techniques used by marketing agencies and PR companies for ages. They played on the masses wants and needs similar to what you see in commercials. This included influencers who posed like models, talked like models, and their pictures were taken by professionals.

Eventually, the masses become attracted to these stars. Many of them posing in clothing by companies such as Adidas or Fashion Nova. When their marketing techniques succeeded, with careful postings during peak times on Instagram and strategic hashtags, these companies flocked to them realizing there was a massive opportunity to reach their followers. Larger companies who use influencer based marketing would ask these up and comers to model their clothing, perfume, beauty products and even show off the “effects” that the products had in improving their lives.

This new industry became known as the “Influencer Marketing” business. Social Media has done incredible things for individuals who otherwise would have no audience. With hashtags placed in certain posts, doing specific poses, and at carefully researched times, individuals could rack up the hits and follows in a matter of hours. As we’ve seen with Social Media, good or bad, a post can get massive attention if the right audience is drawn to it all at once. Now, schools are offering courses that include these specific marketing techniques, and the media industry has been forever changed by this new, but remarkably powerful and influential platform.

Ninja is one the biggest household names in gaming today, and with a massive following and a net worth of $25 million, you can see the lucrative potential of a career in gaming.

Gaming has been around for over 30 years, but it’s popularity and integration into mainstream media has gained a very recent footing. Originally, it was the developers of games who made all of the money in the industry, but now gamers can make millions simply playing the games for a live audience.

With this new booming industry, it needed a partner to bring it to fruition. Previously, companies like Razer and Corsair reigned as kings in gaming product sales. After the realization that the gaming industry would be stretching to live streaming, multimedia companies took advantage of that spike. Companies that produced video tools such as Canon, Panasonic, and Elgato wanted to develop gaming compatible live streaming devices such as game capture tools, easy to use 4K DSLR cameras and live stream switcher boards for at home use. Other companies such as Sony and Beyerdynamic started creating gaming headsets and live stream setup packages for high end audio quality.

The industry has expanded to become one of the most profitable behind music and movies, but even their celebrities have gained popularity that could rival the top Tik Tok, Instagram and media stars.

Markiplier gained notoriety because of his unique voice and his particular brand of commentary, however, most critics originally weren’t keen on his content as it was just “a dude playing video games”. Now having one of the most popular YouTube channels with over 20 million subscribers, sponsors are banging down his door trying to get in on the lucrative advertising potential. Charitable organizations also see his potential, as his live streams are so popular that doing a live philanthropic event where the streamer collects donations have totaled over $3 million.

Even the most respected organizations in media have recognized streamers on their popularity, as TIME Magazine named Pewdiepie one of “The World’s Top 100 Most Influential People” in 2016. He is YouTubes #1 creator, has over 95 million subscribers, and has been described as being a major influence on the gaming industry with some indie developers crediting him with increasing their sales.

With any popular media, there will always be those that view a specific industry with disdain and refuse to understand and analyze why it gained so much notoriety. For anyone, especially in the multimedia/broadcasting industry, gaming is a business that cannot be ignored due to its massive profit, influence, and opportunities.

The new Work From Home trend has shown us many ugly sides of our culture. One of them being inaccessibility to decent internet speeds. This comes from a number of factors, including lack of access to knowledge about the internet, cable companies taking advantage of desperate customers who are unsure of what plan to go with, and not knowing some simple tips and tricks for improving the quality of your internet. This blog contains some information that could help you up your internet game!

Ethernet over WiFi: Ethernet cables are designed to take a network signal from a router/modem and plug it directly into a laptop or computer. This signal is much more secure, and faster. Usually, you need to be closer to your router/modem in order to get the most out of your internet speed, but an ethernet cable removes this issue entirely. With an ethernet cable, your direct connection can make your internet much faster, more secure, and prevent drop outs from happening as frequently.

ISP’s will limit your Download/Upload Speed: Your Internet Service Provider will usually have prices set on how much they allow for your Download/Upload Speed. If you notice your connection is slow, you can always do a test on https://www.speedtest.net/ to find out what your limits are for speed. Contacting your ISP (Internet Service Provider) can be beneficial to learning what deals are out there for increasing your internet speed.

Know the Different Types of Internet: With the internet, from slowest to fastest, there is Dial Up, Satellite, DSL, Cable, and Fiber. Each one of these types of internet has their own unique features that can affect their speed. When searching for different ISP, it’s also important to note what type of services they can provide. Fiber Optics is extremely fast, but currently has limited availability due to it being a newer technology. DSL is usually cheaper than Cable or Fiber, but it can’t offer the same speeds. It’s best to think about what exactly you’re trying to do with your internet access before deciding on a package.

Understanding the Requirements of What You’re Streaming: How many people in your household use the WiFi? What is everyone trying to Stream? Are you trying to Stream 4k video or use a new HD Webcam for video conferencing? Your WiFi can only handle so much at one time, as things such as video conferencing, streaming a movie, and live streaming a video game or podcast all take up bandwidth.

Before deciding on how you can upgrade your internet, first think about what you are using it for. In a world of advanced technology that is improved every year, knowing your options and how you can improve your own household tech is half the battle!

Digital Media is becoming one of the most popular mediums for delivering content. With its capabilities, easy accessibility and developers becoming more and more keen on what users want out of their online platforms, it’s no surprise that digital media has many businesses re-thinking their marketing and training strategies.

With that comes the “boom” of new positions available for multimedia specialists, more specifically for the new positions in E-Learning. Thousands of businesses across the country rely on digital media to increase employee engagement, not only in their everyday work life but also in training for new systems, technology, processes and HR related issues.

It’s important to note that E-Learning materials rely heavily on the skills of multimedia specialists. After all, those same materials are usually presented in the form of graphics, video, audio and more. As the communications business begins to grow, it starts to create symbiotic relationships with other industries. In fact, this growth and expansion has been quite profitable for both E-Learning and Multimedia. The E-Learning market is expected to reach $398.15 billion by 2026.

This surge in demand has created job opportunities for those versed in media such as videographers, voice over artists, graphic designers, audio producers, and more. Those skilled in the communication arts are beginning to realize the broad opportunities available to them, however, these opportunities only present themselves when professionals are willing to expand their horizons and create/develop out of their comfort zone.

Over 95% of Americans have access to some kind of phone, and most of that percentage is in reference to smart phones. Humans always strive to make things better, especially technology. We want to make things more convenient, safer, faster, and more powerful. So to go from a large, heavy phone with a dial that is isolated to whatever room you’re in and can only call certain numbers to a device with more processing power than NASA computers in the 1970’s is a miracle of technology.

Throughout the years, most people are burdened with distance between them and their loved ones, co workers, or cut off from the rest of the world because of their location. Social Media was a saving grace, allowing users to share photos, videos, music, and messages instantly from around the world. Social Media can grant an individual incredible power that can be used for good or evil, with the ability to post a hateful comment anonymously or support a stranger going through a difficult situation.

With billions of eyes glued to their phones, Social Media became one of the most popular platforms for the arts, entertainment, businesses and individuals looking to spread their message to the world. When Facebook reached 1,000,000 users in 2004, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was concerned about advertising on what would become one of the top social media apps too early. He would wait a year until letting the first ad run on Facebook in 2005. As Facebook users grew, so did the frequency of ads. In 1 year, the ad revenue grew to $60 million, and in 2016, apps like Facebook and Instagram made Billions in ad revenue.

Social Media has undoubtedly become one of the top contenders for advertisements. Companies are always looking for new opportunities to advertise their products, so when Social Media gained so much popularity these same companies saw a brilliant opportunity: to advertise right in the palm of a user’s hand. Televisions, radio, and other broadcast formats require a stereo or cable connection to view and listen too. Social Media has the advantage of being available on smartphones, which in the age of 2020 are used by almost everyone in America.

Now more than ever it’s important to note the potential of Social Media Marketing. Dozens of educational institutions have created Social Media Marketing Degrees, courses, and certification programs. Businesses like Walmart, Target, H&M, and Kohls have created entire departments dedicated to the pursuit of Social Media Marketing campaigns. With the power to advertise right on a device that has become a necessary technology in recent years, professionals who learn skills that help them market on social media have grown in demand exponentially.

As the Pandemic rages on, tens of thousands of Americans out of work have been searching for new career options. Some industries have suffered more than others, like restaurants, concert venues, and businesses that rely on live in person operations.

Searches have increased for professional opportunities that are not only safe, but profitable enough to help a family thrive. With #WFH (Work From Home) becoming one of the most popular hashtags on Instagram and Twitter, it’s no surprise that many are flocking to industries like coding and web design especially with an estimated 36.9 Billion in profit for 2020.

This type of work can be done from home, including communicating with clients, collaborations with colleagues and supervisors, and the actual workflow. Many have come up with searches on “Web Development” when exploring new WFH opportunities but are unsure where to start. It’s best to understand the basics before diving into this lucrative and thriving industry.

Think of Web Developers as the architects of a company’s website. They build, design, and update the look and functionality of the site to ensure anyone accessing it is pleased to see how easy it is to navigate, use, and look at (looks do matter after all). Roles of a Web Developer are split into two categories, front end and back end. The front end developer handles the look and feel of the website. They are always up to date on current trends, for example, Apple is a front runner and has been for decades when it comes to great web design. Their “Minimalist” approach to the look of their website has become a staple in modern day web design. Letting the products and contect speak for itself by outlining them, rather than distracting the eyes with fancy graphics that have nothing to do with the product itself. The back end developer handles the data and heavy coding and is considered the “Engineer” to the “Architect”. They make sure that the programming suits the needs of the company, keep up the web servers and make a seemingly random assortment of letters and numbers in a program like Javascript turn into computer magic.

Both the Front End and Back End developers use some kind of programming language like Python, HTML, MySQL, CSS so although the designers are using code, they didn’t just learn every language at once. They learned, practiced and applied them all one at a time as any great future developer does. Learning these languages comes with time, patience, and a strong passion for the craft. These languages have been mastered by many professionals, and those professionals have even helped to create schools and programs to teach and guide others on how they can master the craft of web development too.

2020 has brought forth so many surprises, both good and bad, it has taught us more about ourselves through quarantine, survival instincts, and more importantly, what we are truly passionate about. The Web Development industry is made great by individuals who are truly passionate about the craft.
